What Tectonic Plate Am I On?

Every point on Earth rides on top of a moving lithospheric plate. Detect your current location or search any city to check your plate name, drift speed, and distance to the closest active earthquake fault line.

Understanding Earth's Tectonic Mosaic

Can a City Be Split Across Two Plates?

Yes. California is a classic case. The San Andreas Fault separates the Pacific Plate to the west from the North American Plate to the east. Los Angeles sits on the Pacific Plate, slowly travelling northwest, while San Francisco proper and Sacramento sit on the North American Plate. In about 20 million years, Los Angeles will pass by San Francisco.

Why Do Some Regions Have Zero Earthquakes?

Regions situated deep in the interior of a stable tectonic plate (called continental cratons) experience very little tectonic deformation. Cities like London, Paris, and Chicago sit thousands of kilometers away from the nearest active boundary, making major earthquakes exceptionally rare.

The Triple Junction of Tokyo

Tokyo is one of the most tectonically complex metropolises on the globe. It sits near the convergence of three separate plates: the Pacific Plate, the Philippine Sea Plate, and the Okhotsk microplate. The subduction of oceanic lithosphere under Japan generates frequent tremors and deep mantle earthquakes.

How Fast Does Earth Move Underfoot?

Tectonic drift speeds range from 1 centimeter per year (about as fast as your fingernails grow) along the sluggish Antarctic and Arctic margins, up to 10 centimeters per year for the fast-moving Pacific and Nazca plates. Over a human lifetime, you travel roughly 2 to 6 meters through plate motion alone.
